There is a variant called Lager Malt from England which is very similar. It may benefit from ditching the Lager malt in favour of something with a bit more character, but it is what it is: a reliable, easy drinking Blonde Ale.ĥ.5% ABV // 12 IBU // Drink at around 8✬Ĭlues in the title, this malt is used to achieve classic Pilsner style Beers and Lagers or Pale Ales with a delicate, clean flavour and light pale colour. The main selling point is the fresh, earthy, floral quality which is provided, giving the impression this Ale isn’t manufactured, but instead a true craft. This Ale may not necessarily stand out, but it is good, no questions about that. The lacing is spread out and of a high quality, the sign of a well crafted Ale. So we start with a nice big head, and generally, it is quite consistent, dissipating at a gradual rate. There is a light medium body, a low level of carbonation and it is just slightly dry on the palate. The finish is crisp and refreshing while being a bit earthy and a bit floral the Beer generally has a fresh quality. We get more from the Lager malts, and there is a grainy quality with a sweet caramel malt backbone. The taste features these earthy hops as well while being more evident, providing a husky floral quality with a slight citric kick alongside green apples. A subtle touch of caramel gives a sweetness which counters against the light bitterness from the earthy hops. On the nose it will primarily be Lager malts you will notice with filling notes of oat, cereal and grain. This Blonde Ale pours golden-yellow in colour and it supports a thick, finely frothed, off-white head which dissipates slightly after leaving it to rest. As of 2020, the brewery has started selling its first premium craft gin, “The Storr”.

Pam MacRuary (Angus’ wife) was originally the head brewer, being the only female brewer in Scotland at the time. In 1998, a bottling facility was installed, however, as the demand became too great, a contract was taken out for The Isle Of Skye Brewing Company’s Beer to be bottled at Belhaven Brewery.

In 1998, the brewery won the Campaign for Real Ale Champion Beer of Scotland, which set the business in motion and trail-blazed the route for plenty more awards over the years. The 20 barrel brew house was manufactured by Macmillan of Edinburgh who are known in the brew world for supplying the famous coppers at Caledonian Brewery. In 1996, Tinney sold his share of the company to MacRuary, who would now be the sole owner and commit to giving up his teaching job as a means of driving the business forward. “Red Cuillin”, now known as “Skye Red”, was the first Ale brewed at the new site located on ferry pier in Uig. At the time there were only six small independent breweries in Scotland and opening one on Skye would be the islands first.
